International, national, and E.164 phone formats

A country calling code identifies the destination country in international dialing: the United States and Canada use +1, the United Kingdom uses +44, China uses +86, and Japan uses +81. The code is separate from the national number and does not tell you whether a number is assigned.

International format adds a readable space or grouping after the calling code. E.164 keeps the plus sign and digits in one machine-friendly string, such as +14155550123. National format omits the calling code and follows the selected country's domestic presentation. Use E.164 in API fixtures, international format in screenshots, and national format when testing a local form.

Why country-specific rules matter

Countries differ in subscriber length, mobile prefixes, trunk prefixes, and grouping conventions. A UK mobile sample has a different shape from a Chinese mobile sample; a North American number follows a ten-digit numbering plan, while many European countries use variable-looking local groupings. This tool applies a country-aware length and mobile prefix profile so your mock data resembles the selected region.

These are presentation rules, not a carrier database. Numbering plans change, some regions share a calling code, and a valid-looking sequence may belong to nobody or to somebody else. For production validation, pair your fixture with a maintained metadata library such as Google's libphonenumber and test the exact field contract your application expects.

Avoid digits, repeats, and sequences

Some teams need predictable exclusions. Enter digits such as 4 when a China-focused test case should avoid that number, or exclude 0 when a form treats leading zeroes specially. You can also avoid repeated digits and obvious runs like 1234 to make sample data look less artificial or to exercise a validation branch.

Do not confuse an exclusion with a cultural rule that applies everywhere. Preferences vary by country, carrier, and audience. Keep the exclusion documented in the fixture name, and maintain a separate edge-case set that intentionally includes repeated or unusual digits.

Temporary, virtual, and test numbers are different

A test sample is a placeholder value for software. A virtual or temporary number may be a real service that can receive calls or SMS for a period of time. This generator provides no number service and never checks a carrier. Never use its output for account registration, identity verification, OTP delivery, impersonation, spam, or bypassing platform limits.

Most importantly, format validation is not availability validation. A number that passes a pattern check cannot be assumed to receive a call, SMS, or verification code. Use a provider's documented sandbox numbers when an integration genuinely needs inbound messages, and keep those credentials and test accounts separate from public examples.
