How to calculate profit margin on Shopify

Profit margin is the percentage of each sale you keep after costs. The formula is profit margin = (selling price − total costs) ÷ selling price × 100, where total costs include product cost, shipping, and Shopify payment fees. This calculator applies that formula in real time and shows a full breakdown.

For example, a $50 product with a $20 product cost, $5 shipping, and about $1.75 in Shopify fees leaves roughly $23.25 in profit, a margin near 46.5%. The exact number depends on your plan and payment provider, which is why the advanced settings let you adjust the fee rates.

Shopify fees explained

Shopify charges two kinds of fees. The first is a payment processing fee when you take a card payment, which is a percentage plus a small fixed amount per transaction. The second is an additional transaction fee that Shopify applies if you use a third-party payment provider instead of Shopify Payments. On top of these, there is a monthly subscription for your plan.

None of these are one fixed global number. Processing rates and transaction fees vary by plan and market, and the subscription cost depends on your plan and billing cycle. This calculator uses editable estimates so you can match the rates to your actual situation.

Shopify Payments vs third-party payment providers

With Shopify Payments, you pay the card processing rate and Shopify does not add a separate transaction fee. With a third-party payment provider, you still pay your processor's own fees, and Shopify also adds its own transaction fee on top. That extra transaction fee is Shopify's charge, not your processor's.

The calculator reflects this difference. Choosing Shopify Payments applies only the card rate, while choosing a third-party provider also applies the additional transaction fee. Remember that your third-party processor's own fees are separate and not included unless you enter them yourself.

Profit margin vs markup

These two terms measure profit against different bases. Profit margin compares profit to your selling price, while markup compares profit to your product cost. A product that costs $20 and sells for $50 has a $30 gross difference — but that is a 60% margin and a 150% markup, and the two are not interchangeable.

This calculator shows margin relative to revenue and markup relative to product cost, because once you factor in shipping and Shopify fees the two diverge further. Keeping them straight matters when you set prices or read a supplier's suggested markup.

What is a good profit margin for Shopify?

There is no single good margin, because it depends on your category, competition, and business model. Higher-margin products leave room for advertising, returns, and growth, while lower-margin products need volume. What matters is that your margin stays positive after every cost is accounted for, including the fees you might overlook.

Use the calculator to test your real numbers, then compare margins across products. The reference table below shows how margin changes with price for your current cost structure, which is a fast way to spot which products are worth keeping.

How to price products and find break-even

Instead of guessing a price, work backward from a target margin. Because Shopify fees include a percentage and a fixed amount, the required selling price is not a simple cost multiplier — the calculator solves for it correctly using your fee configuration. Enter your target margin and it returns the price you need to charge.

The same logic gives you a break-even price at a 0% margin, below which every sale loses money. Set your real price above that floor, then test how a higher target margin moves the number. For a deeper comparison of e-commerce profitability, see our Amazon Profit Calculator.
